Winter: A Time to Reflect

As I reflect on the accomplishments here at Gurnee Park District over the past year, I am truly honored to be a part of an organization that continuously strives to provide fun and rewarding recreational activities to our community.

Over the past year, we witnessed many positive changes take place; changes that will lead us to a new and better "normal." I want to thank you all for continuing to choose Gurnee Park District.

Susie Kuruvilla, Executive Director
During the spring and summer of 2021, the reduction of COVID related restrictions allowed us to do more in-person activities. While maintaining a safe environment, we saw over 40,000 visitors at the Aquatic Center - the highest attendance in over four years. Maybe it was the weather, but I like to think it was our welcoming staff, cleanliness, commitment to safety, and amazing water features, just to name a few. Our summer camp program also saw attendance increases with over 1,300 campers throughout the summer. Camp staff provided memorable activities and plenty of FUN while maintaining mitigation standards. As summer ended, we dove right into fall. The school year began with the in-person return of our Growing Tree Preschool and Before and After School CARE programs. After a long year of remote learning, these programs offer a place for children to socialize and be kids again.

Speaking of being kids again…over the last year, we saw a rise in outdoor recreation, specifically through our park usage. Families utilized playgrounds for much needed breaks from home. Adults found solace in our many walking trails. District parks became and remain more important than ever. With that said, I urge you to rediscover our parks! You can start at the recently renovated Timberwoods Park, which now boasts more challenging structures for those ages 5-12, including a giant, half-moon shaped tube slide – it really is a sight to see! As the winter temperatures grow colder, grab your skates and test out our three outdoor ice rinks located at Betty Russell Park, Hunt Club Park, and Viking Park. With 28 parks, there is plenty to see and do this winter!

In addition to our outdoor winter recreation, we are also offered family-friendly events, such as our "Breakfast with Santa," and "Santa Calls. Frosty Fest will be held again on January 8 at Bittersweet Golf Course. The smiles and laughter that are associated with these events are always infectious! We understand that even a good laugh can have a huge impact on our health and well-being during the winter months.

The winter months can seem endless, challenging both our mental and physical health. It is important, however, to stay active during this time. Our indoor gym, FitNation, provides a safe space for you to escape the winter "blues" and socialize with others who have similar interests. As you look ahead to making New Year's resolutions and maintaining your physical health, keep in mind that FitNation also offers two convenient locations, a private Women's Only Studio, 40+ group exercise classes weekly, affordable and safe childcare, and more.

Over the past year, we witnessed many positive changes take place; changes that will lead us to a new and better "normal." I want to thank you all for continuing to choose Gurnee Park District. We pride ourselves in being an essential fixture in our community, and this could not be possible without your unwavering support. We can't wait to share what is in store for 2022! Happy New Year to you and yours!
